#MHForAll Webinar Series

Throughout the year, we conduct webinars exploring various aspects and intersections of mental health, showcasing the transformative work being led by Action Network members.

These webinars offer diverse perspectives from the field including academics, UN agency representatives, civil society advocates, donors and more! Sessions are curated to provide insights into the latest mental health data and research with prominent global experts and amplify the voices of national partners and people with lived experience. They are designed to offer practical solutions to address the most pressing challenges in mental health.

Religion, Faith and Mental Health

27th February 2025 - session timing TBC

Religion - and its related facets of faith and spirituality - has a long history of connection to mental health. From healthy practices for the mind and body to having a sense of structure, and from connecting with others to believing in something bigger than ourselves, faith and spirituality positively influence our mental health in many ways. Research suggests that religiosity reduces suicide rates, alcoholism and drug use.

However, the history of mental health also carries negative connections to religion. In certain cultures, there are testimonies of religious beliefs and practices increasing the prevalence of anxiety through the induction of guilt and fear, whereas, primarily Eurocentric, religious institutions have cared for people with mental illness and influenced the treatment of marginalised people for centuries, often with harmful effects.

In this webinar, we will explore the connections between religion and mental health, and ask how we can harness the benefits of faith to our wellbeing, especially in the context of a world which is increasingly showing less interest in traditional spirituality.
